Bluffton shuts down Elms 7-1 in season opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team kicked off its 2019 campaign with a convincing 7-1 victory over Elms College on Saturday, March 2.

A Colin Gregory (Fremont/Clyde) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first picked up Adam Duncan (Northwood/Lake) who laced a leadoff triple, giving Bluffton a 1-0 lead before Elms could record an out. The Beavers added four big tallies in the third thanks to a two-run double by junior Parker Reynolds (Avon) and an RBI triple by sophomore Lenny Winiarski (Cincinnati/LaSalle).

Doubles by Duncan and Gregory in the seventh made it 6-0 before Reynolds put a cherry on top with a base knock that plated Gregory for a 7-0 advantage. Elms threatened in the eighth, pushing their first run across the plate, but freshman Zac Nobis (Bryan) slammed the door with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief that saw him extinguish the bases-loaded threat.

Reynolds went 3-of-4 with three RBI, while Duncan finished 2-of-4 with three runs scored. Gregory drove in two for the victors.

Junior Tommy Siemer (Liberty Township/Lakota East) collected the win with five scoreless innings on the hill. He fanned six and walked four while giving up just three hits. Mike Aman (Dublin/Coffman) allowed one run in 2.1 innings of work. He and Nobis both fired two strikeouts while surrendering one walk apiece.

Bluffton is back in action on Sunday, March 3, when the Beavers are at Terry Park Field #2 to take on Rivier at 3 p.m.
