LIMA, Ohio - The Bluffton University swimming and diving team kicked off its 2024-25 campaign on Friday, Oct. 4. Joining the Beavers at the Lima YMCA was Malone, an NCAA Division II school from Canton.
The men set six school records with freshmen Justin Hassranah (Cunupia, Trinidad and Tobago/Vishnu Boys Hindu College) and Landon Gardner (Whitehall, Mich./Grand Haven) leading the way. Hassranah moved to the top of the charts in the 1,000 yard freestyle (13:16.56) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:04.24). Gardner now holds the top spot with a 33.69 in the 50 yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Grant Patton (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) broke his own school record in the 50 yard backstroke with a 29.74.
For the first time in school history the men were able to field relay teams for the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard medley. Hassranah, Gardner, Patton and junior Riley Bruns (Maria Stein/Marion Local) went 1:40.56 and 1:57.02 in the freestyle and medley, respectively.
Junior Sydney Grisier (Bryan) broke her school record with a 15:53 in the 1,000 yard freestyle. Also showing out for the women was freshman Jami Baker (Lowell, Ind.) who now stands 2nd all-time in the 100 yard butterfly with a 1:09.66 and 3rd all-time with a 1:08.83 in the 100 yard IM.
The 200 yard freestyle team of Baker, Grisier, Havin Montague (Celina) and Juliana Brooks (Canton/McKinley) put it together for a time of 2:14.89 on Friday night, 4th all-time for the Beavers.
Bluffton returns to the pool on Friday, Oct. 18, when the Beavers welcome Hiram College to the Lima YMCA at 6 p.m.
