Mount St. Joseph posts 4-1 win over Beavers

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team came up short on the scoreboard but the post-game fireworks brightened up the sky when Lauryn Foster-Wheeler (Sidney) said yes to Erick Benge's marriage proposal! Bluffton slipped to 1-12-1 overall and 0-6 in the Heartland Conference, while MSJ improved to 12-1-3 and 5-0-1 in the HCAC with the 4-1 victory on a cool Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The Lions jumped on top with a Jodie Weimer tally just 1:33 into the match. Bluffton kept it a one-score difference until minute 38 when MSJ made it 2-0. Two more scores early in the second half pushed the spread to 4-0 until sophomore Abigail Newkirk (New Vienna/Fairfield) headed home her first collegiate goal thanks to a cross from senior Skylar Liming (St. Marys/Memorial), making the final score 4-1 in favor of the visitors.

Liming paced the Beavers with six shots, including four on frame. Sophomore keeper Sienna Sullivan (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) turned away 13 Lion shot attempts.

MSJ finished with a marked 38-8 edge in shots while forcing six of the eight corner kicks Wednesday afternoon. The Lions were whistled for two more fouls (8-6) than the Beavers.

Bluffton is back at the Sears Complex for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. when Transylvania makes the trip up Interstate 75 from Lexington, Ky.
