Bluffton caps weekend with sweeps of Marietta and Elizabethtown

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Bluffton rebounded from a pair of tough Friday losses with convincing sweeps of Marietta and Elizabethtown on Saturday, Sept. 22. The Beavers went 2-2 at the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational in Pittsburg, Pa.

Senior Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) torched Marietta with 19 kills and a .516 hitting percentage! Also wailing away on the Pioneers was sophomore Remi Bower (Deshler/Patrick Henry) who went for eight kills and no errors on just 13 swings for a blistering .615 hitting percentag. Senior Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) hit .462 with seven kills agaisnt just one error. The Beavers fashioned a ridiculous .404 hitting percentage for the match and added to their firepower with 10 aces!

Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley), who went over 1,000 career digs in the first match of the day, handed out 31 assists to go along with her nine pickups. Freshman libero Brooke Kleman (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) came up with a match-high 14 digs.

Martini continued her hot play with 13 kills and eight digs in the sweep of Elizabethtown. Bower had another superb outing, going for nine kills and a .304 hitting percentage. Freshman Maddie White (Ashland) and sophomore Sarah Heidinger (Tiro/Buckeye Central) chipped in with seven and six kills, respectively. Gibson was in on three blocks.

Weisgarber, who led the Beavers with 14 digs, dished out 33 assists for the victors. Kleman picked up 12 digs, while seniors Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) and Courtney Zimpfer (Jackson Center) added 11 digs apiece.

Bluffton is off until next Saturday, Sept. 29, when they kick off Heartland Conference action against 2017 HCAC champion Hanover College. The first serve is slated for 5:30 p.m. Come out and support your Beavers following the home football game with Mount St. Joseph!
