Bluffton shuts down Alvernia 1-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Bluffton University baseball team secured a split with Alvernia in the Sunshine State when they notched a 1-0 victory on Friday, March 11. The Beavers improved to 2-6 on the season while the Golden Wolves fell to 4-8-1.

In the top of the eighth, Nick Diana (Batavia/West Clermont) opened the frame with a single and moved into scoring position thanks to an Alvernia throwing error. Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) continued his hot start with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Diana and secured the 1-0 Beaver victory.

Starting on the mound for Bluffton was Carson Curnutte (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) who tossed six innings of seven-hit shutout ball. Jacob Boelkens (Millbury/Lake) picked up the win with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief. Seth Evans (Ada/OSU-Lima) nailed down the save in his 0.2 innings of no-hit closing. Baumgartner was the offensive sparkplug, going 1-for-2 with his game winning RBI.

The Beavers finish off their spring break trip on Saturday, March 12, when they face Rockford University. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Lee County PDC. Go Beavers!
