Bluffton offense sluggish in sweep by Transy

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Bluffton University baseball team struggled to generate offense in a pair of Heartland Conference setbacks at the hands of Transylvania University on Sunday, April 10, 2022. Bluffton fell to 9-13 overall and 2-4 in the HCAC, while the Pioneers improved to 10-13 and 4-2 in the league.

Transylvania plated a run in the second and two in the fifth for a 3-0 lead in game one. Bluffton made it 3-1 two innings later when Garrett O'Reilly (Galena/Orange) walked, stole second and crossed the dish following a Transylvania error, but that was the extent of Bluffton's offense as the Beavers managed just two paltry hits in game one.

Senior Carson Curnutte (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) took the loss despite allowing just three runs on seven hits in his six-inning start. He fanned six Pioneers and allowed just one free pass.

Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) and Carson Kindred (Brookville/Troy Christian) had the only two hits for the Beavers. Eddie Budinski (Louisville) and Spencer Garrison (West Salem/Northwestern) both worked scoreless frames to keep the visitors within striking distance.

It was more of the same in the nightcap as a two-run ground-rule double by Brandon Wilson (Casstown/Miami East) in the top of third was the only scoring Bluffton put on the board. Transy scored two in the first, two in the third and two in the sixth en route to a 6-2 victory that secured the doubleheader sweep.

Towell, Wilson and Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) notched two hits apiece in game two.

O'Reilly fell to 1-2 after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings on the hill. He struck out four and walked one. Seth Evans (Ada/OSU-Lima) worked 1.2 innings of no-hit relief for the Beavers.

Bluffton jumps right back into action on Tuesday, April 12, when the Beavers welcome Hiram College to Memorial Field. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.
