Bluffton splits a pair at Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball team split a pair of games at Heartland Conference foe Anderson University on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Bluffton moved to 12-15 overall and 5-5 in the Heartland, while the Ravens stand 14-13 with a 6-4 mark in the HCAC.

Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) put Bluffton on top with a one-out homer in the top of the first and he struck again with an RBI double in the fifth. A two-run Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) long ball that drove in Baumgartner made it 4-2, but three Anderson tallies in the home half and four more in the sixth gave the Ravens a 9-4 lead. Anderson added two more runs in the eighth on the way to an 11-4 victory.

Baumgartner went 2-of-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Fellow junior Jacob Boelkens (Millbury/Lake) dropped his first decision of the year, falling to 3-1 after allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out three and walked three. Darius Boeke (Sidney) did not allow a run in 1.2 innings of one-hit relief.

Nathaniel DeWeese (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) and Ezra Deitering (Ottawa/Miller City) put the visitors up 2-0 with RBI singles in the second inning of game two. Baumgartner and Grant Hovest (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) made it 4-0 with sacrifice flies in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. A Nick Diana (Batavia/West Clermont) homer pushed the spread to 5-0 before a passed ball in the eighth sent Hovest home with run number six.

Freshman Andrew Collinsworth (Westerville/Westerville South) was dialed in, tossing 7.1 scoreless frames and scattering four hits while evening up his record at 2-2. He fanned three and walked three. Carson Curnutte (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) capped off the shutout by striking out two of the five batters he faced while not allowing a hit or run.

Deitering went 2-of-2 with a run, an RBI and two walks. Diana and Hovest both scored twice in game two.

Bluffton will be back at Memorial Field for a conference double-dipper against Hanover College on Saturday, April 23. Game one is slated for a noon start.
