ONU downs Bluffton 8-4 at Memorial Field

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University baseball team turned its final split squad game of the year into a varsity contest with Ohio Northern on Thursday, April 28, 2022. ONU rallied for an 8-4 win, improving to 16-18 on the season. Bluffton fell to 16-19 with a trip to Rose-Hulman looming on the horizon.

Ezra Deitering (Ottawa/Miller City) plated Dylan Gray (Hilliard/Hilliard Bradley) and Adam Yoh (Milford) followed with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt that sent Brandon Wilson (Casstown/Miami East) home in the bottom of the fourth. Gray singled in Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) an inning later and Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) made it 4-3 Bluffton when he crossed the dish courtesy of a Polar Bear error.

The visitors knotted it up with an unearned run in the seventh and the floodgates opened in the eighth as ONU found its stroke with five hits and four runs on the way to an 8-4 victory on a chilly Thursday night at Memorial Field.

Towell, Wilson and Kenny Schneider (Sunbury/Big Walnut) all tallied two hits for the Beavers.

Senior Wayne Frey (Kirby/Riverdale) worked a perfect third with one strikeout. Sophomore Darius Boeke (Sidney) fell to 1-1 after allowing four runs on four hits in the eighth inning. Freshman Nathan Young (Copley) worked around a couple errors in the ninth to keep it a four-run game.

Bluffton will hit the road for a crucial Heartland Conference series at Rose-Hulman on Sunday, May 1, 2022. Game one from Terre Haute, Ind., is slated for noon.
