Rose-Hulman sweeps a pair from Beavers

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball team dropped both ends of a Heartland Conference doubleheader at Rose-Hulman on Sunday, May 1, 2022. Bluffton fell to 16-21 overall and 8-8 in the Heartland, while Rose improved to 22-10 with an 11-5 mark in the HCAC.

Rose put up two quick runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a one-out Josh Mesenbrink homer to right. Brett Tuttle made it 3-0 with his bomb an inning later and that was more than enough as the Beavers managed just three paltry hits in the 3-0 game one setback.

Carson Curnutte (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) allowed just three runs on seven hits but fell to 2-5 on the season when Bluffton was unable to give him any run support. He struck out five and walked two in seven innings on the bump. Andrew Collinsworth (Westerville/Westerville South) worked a scoreless eighth for the visitors.

Bluffton led game two 2-0 and 6-3, but the Beavers were unable to get it home as RHIT nailed down a spot in the HCAC tournament with a 10-7 victory on Sunday. Garrett O'Reilly (Galena/Orange) made it 2-0 in the third and after Rose put up three runs in the bottom half, Bluffton went up 6-3 in the fourth. A two-run single by Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) was the only hit as Rose walked three batters and hit another.

The home team came right back with three runs, including a pair of homers, in the bottom of the fourth and then Rose put it away with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth on the way to a 10-7 victory and sweep of the Beavers. Kenny Schneider (Sunbury/Big Walnut) scored on a wild pitch, but it wasn't meant to be as Bluffton left the sacks full in the ninth.

Baumgartner was 3-of-5 with two RBI. O'Reilly drove in three and scored twice. Adam Yoh (Milford) also scored two runs.

O'Reilly gave up six runs on nine hits in five innings but did not factor in the decision. He fanned five and walked one batter. Jacob Boelkens (Millbury/Lake) gave up an unearned score in the seventh, falling to 4-2 on the season.

Bluffton wraps up its regular season on Friday, May 6, when Mount St. Joseph heads up Interstate 75. Game one is slated for noon at Memorial Field.
