MSJ hands Bluffton 5-0 setback in HCAC opener

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's soccer team struggled in the first half on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, allowing the College of Mount St. Joseph to put in four unanswered goals. Bluffton slowed the Lions in the second half, but the Beavers were unable to find the back of the net as MSJ moved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Heartland Conference. Bluffton fell to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in HCAC action.

The home team tallied its first goal on a penalty kick from CHRISTOPHER CORBETT just 2:27 into the game. MSJ quickly added another goal by TIM POPE just six minutes later; the tally was set up by Corbett. Mount St. Joseph went up 3-0 on a DANIEL BLAIR score less than eight minutes after the second goal. The Lions fourth goal came with five minutes left in the period on a shot from BRYSON LEWIS who was also assisted by Corbett.
 
The Beavers came out of the break fighting to get back in the match. Bluffton took six shots in the first 20 minutes of the half. The Beavers couldn't stop the Lions offense, allowing MSJ to score one more time before the end of the contest. 
 
Bluffton University fired 15 shots (six on target), while Mount St. Joseph put up 24. The Beavers forced only three corner kicks, while the Lions countered with 10. Junior DAN SAVILLE(Toledo/Central Catholic) recorded 11 saves in the loss. BRAIN GOOD (Elida), JACOBGRAHAM (Gomer/Elida), and KELLY BARNES (Toledo/Christian) led the Beaver offense with three shots apiece, one on target for Barnes and two on frame for Graham. Mount St. Joseph racked up 13 more fouls than the visitors (16-3).
 
The Bluffton men will play Heidelberg at home on Wednesday, September 29. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
