Beavers wrap up season at HCAC Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University swimming and diving team showed out at the HCAC Championships which were staged from Wednesday, Feb. 14, through Saturday, Feb. 17.

The 200 yard medley relay got things rolling with a 7th place finish on Friday. Swimming to 4th place in Bluffton's record books were Grace Beck (Lima/Homeschooled), Sara Kroeger (Cincinnati/Mount Notre Dame), Sydney Grisier (Bryan) and Havin Montague (Celina) with a time of 2:26.78. A 4:52.64 by the same contingent in the 400 yard freestyle broke the school mark by just under seven seconds as it put 20 points in the Bluffton scoring column.

Beck put up two of the top three times in Bluffton history with a 4th place finish in the 100 yard backstroke, sporting a 1:04.92 in the finals! Her 56.60 in the 100 yard freestlye earned the Beavers eight points with an 8th place finish that was 4th all-time for the Bluffton women.

Grisier moved to the top of the 3-meter 11-dives list with a score of 188.55 at the Vigo Schools Aquatic Center.

Freshman Grant Patton (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) broke the men's 100 yard backstroke record twice at the HCAC Championships, swimming a 1:05.36 in the prelims and coming back with a 1:04.31 in the finals! The 2:22.19 he put up in the 200 yard backstroke also broke his previous school mark by nearly five seconds.

Also in the record-breaking business was sophomore Riley Bruns (Maria Stein/Marion Local) as his 54.93 in the 100 yard freestyle moved to the top of the charts by over seven tenths of a second. Bruns stands 3rd all-time in the 100 yard breaststroke after posting a 1:20.55.

The men and women both placed 7th at the HCAC Championships as the 2023-24 season came to a close.
