BLUFFTON, Ohio - On Saturday, April 12, 2008 the Bluffton University softball team hosted its second annual Strike-Out Cancer event prior to the Bluffton vs. Franklin doubleheader. Strike-Out Cancer and events like this represent the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. |
| More than three million volunteers across America and Canada are involved and waging the battle against cancer on every front: research, education, prevention, service and advocacy. Danielle and Michael Baszler's daughter, Avery, was diagnosed with JMML (juvenile myleomonocytic leukemia) on April 26, 2006 (11.5 month old). JMML affects around 4 in every million children. The only potential cure for JMML is a bone marrow transplant. Danielle was Coach Bruder's teammate at Alma and is still one of her closest friends. |

Avery received 3 rounds of low dose chemo and a splenectomy prior to her bone marrow transplant. She received a high dose of chemo right before her bone marrow transplant and then received her BMT on October 6, 2006. Avery was hospitalized for 3 weeks and then she was able to come home. Following her transplant, Avery was on a multitude of medicines, but luckily had minimal side effects so she was able to discontinue most of her meds quickly. She celebrated her one year post transplant "re-birthday" last October and we're looking forward to celebrating her 2 year anniversary in 6 months. |

The softball team swept HCAC rival Franklin to cap off Strike-Out Cancer Day with a pair of five-inning victories. Bluffton won the first game 10-1 and then posted a 9-1 win in game two. The softball team has raised over $1405.00 for the American Cancer Society and it plans to continue this annual event at Bluffton University. |
