Bluffton offense struggles in Tuesday setbacks

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bluffton University softball team dropped a pair of decisions on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. Bluffton fell to 2-3 after losses to Penn State-Brandywine and Delaware Valley at The Spring Games.

Lily Tate (Mount Gilead/Northmor) singled home Kryshel Dales (Defiance/Ayersville) in the top of the third and Bobbi Adams (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) followed with a perfectly-executed sacrifice bunt that picked up Sydney Zinkon (Fresno/Ridgewood) for a 2-0 lead.

Brandywine answered right back with two runs in the home half. A three-run Cassario bomb to right two inning later capped off the scoring as the Lions moved to 4-1 with the win.

Junior Erin Norman (Pleasant Hill/Newton) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in four innings of work. She struck out two and walked one. Madison Jones (West Milton/Milton Union) worked two innings of scoreless relief, firing three strikeouts. Tate had the only two Bluffton hits in game one.

Freshman Mia McCartney (North Baltimore) walked, stole second and came around to score when Zinkon reached on a Delaware Valley error in the bottom of the third. The 1-0 lead held until the top of the sixth when the Aggies uncorked for five runs on just two hits and three errors.

Tate's two-run double to left center in the home seventh made it 5-3 but a pair of popups to second ended the threat on Tuesday night under the lights.

Tate, who finished the day with four safeties and two RBI, and Ashton Curnutte (Urbana) both smacked two hits in game two.

Jones slipped to 1-1 despite allowing just three runs and three hits in five innings on the bump. She fanned five and walked three. Norman allowed two unearned runs on two hits in two frames of work.

Bluffton will be off on Wednesday before going back to Leesburg on Thursday, March 10. Game one from Sleepy Hallow is slated for 10:45 a.m. against Bethany Lutheran. John Carroll will follow at 1:15 p.m.
