Rose-Hulman sweeps Beavers on Senior Day

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team celebrated Senior Day before Rose-Hulman swept the Beavers on a chilly Saturday, April 20, 2024. Bluffton slipped to 6-26 on the season and 0-10 in the Heartland Conference, while the Fightin' Engineers improved to 20-10 and 7-3 in HCAC action.

Mia McCartney (North Baltimore) tripled to lead off the Bluffton first and she crossed the dish following a Rose error, making it 2-1 Engineers, but that was the lone hit for the Beavers on the way to an 8-1 victory for RHIT.

Katie Fleshman (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) drew the start on Senior Day and she went the distance. Fleshman allowed eight runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth in game two. Junior Hayley Lewis (Kettering/Fairmont) followed base hits from Emily Hope (Enon/Greenon) and Riley Hammonds (Russia) with an RBI single up the middle.

It was 1-1 going to seventh, but the visitors smacked it around with five hits and five runs, including a three-run bomb for Katelyn Sarvis that sent Rose to a sweep with its 6-1 victory.

Hope fell to 3-5 after allowing six runs on 12 hits in six innings of work. She did not walk a batter in game two. She scored Bluffton's run, while Lewis added an RBI for the Beavers.

Bluffton will kick off a busy week that includes three Heartland Conference doubleheaders with a trip to Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, April 24. Game one is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Cincinnati.
