Bluffton pounds John Jay 14-3 in Florida finale

March 7, 2009

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team finished off its marathon week in Florida with a convincing 14-3 victory over John Jay on Saturday, March 7, 2009, before departing for Ohio. The Beavers improved to 5-5 with the victory after a grueling schedule that included two contests each with a pair of OAC heavyweights, #5 Heidelberg and John Carroll.

Bluffton jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, giving senior starter Matt Perkins (Convoy/Crestview) all the run support the Beavers would need. John Jay, which finished the week 0-8, took advantage of two unearned runs and three hits in the bottom of the third to pull within two runs, 5-3, but that was the end of the scoring for the Bloodhounds.

The visitors on the scoreboard posted runs in the fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth frames, tallying 17 hits in the 14-3 win over John Jay at the Snowbird Classic despite four Bluffton errors in the contest.

Aaron Koone (Toledo/Start) went 2-of-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Allen Slabaugh (Dalton), Stephen Torres (Lima/Juan Diego) and Nick Broyles (Toledo/Whitmer) all rapped three hits in the victory with Torres scoring three times. Torres, Greg Bergstedt (Napoleon/Patrick Henry) and Broyles drove in two runs each.

Bluffton returns to action on Wednesday, March 11, when the Beavers travel to Chillicothe for another matchup with Muskingum College. The contest is slated to start at 4 p.m.
