Beavers get shutout in HCAC opener 12-0

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball team fell behind 5-0 after two innings and Rose-Hulman kept pouring it on as the Engineers opened Heartland Conference play with a 12-0 shutout on Friday, March 21, 2014. Bluffton fell to 7-5 and had its five-game winning streak snapped, while Rose-Hulman improved to 6-4 on the season.

Three Rose hits in the first and four more in the second added up to a 5-0 RHIT lead after just two innings. The Engineers added a score in the fourth and two in the sixth en route to an 8-0 advantage over the visitors.

RHIT capped the scoring with four tallies in the eighth for a 12-0 victory when Bluffton went down in order in the ninth.

Senior David Ianiro (Highland Heights/Mayfield) had two of Bluffton's three hits, including a third inning double. Fellow senior Doug Paullin (Jeromesville/Hillsdale) had Bluffton's other safety, a single to right center to lead off the top of the sixth.

Nate Simonds (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) fell to 1-3 after surrendering six runs on nine hits in five innings of work. He struck out two and walked three in the loss. Andrew Stull needed just 111 pitches for a complete-game three-hitter. He improved to 1-2 with his shutout of the Beavers.

Bluffton and Rose-Hulman will wrap up the series with a couple contests on Saturday, March 22. Game one is slated for 12 p.m. at Art Nehf Field.
