Beavers drop a pair at Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball team capped off the weekend with a trip to Anderson University on Sunday, March 21, 2021. Bluffton's bats came alive, but Anderson's offense was in peak form on Sunday as the Ravens swept a pair of high scoring games (17-12, 12-9). The Beavers fell to 1-8 on the season, while Anderson improved to 6-4 overall and in the conference.

With game one knotted 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Anderson looked to take control when the home team put eight runs on the scoreboard. That 11-3 lead was short-lived as Bluffton responded with seven tallies in the top of the fifth. Reid Ruhl (Hamilton) and Jacob Latkofsky (Temperance, MI/Ida) delivered the big hits with a two-run single for Ruhl and a two-run double for Latkofsky as the Beavers pulled within a run.

A Jaxon Rogan (Marysville) single plated Cale Sherbourne (Sunbury/Big Walnut) and Ruhl's sacrifice fly picked up Adam Duncan (Northwood/Lake) an inning later, putting Bluffton up by a run.

The Ravens responded with four scores in the home half and two more in the eighth en route to the 17-12 victory in a game one that came up just a few minutes shy of four hours on Sunday.

Ruhl drove in four runs to lead the offense. Latkofsky added three RBI for the visitors. Sherbourne crossed the dish three times in game one.

Junior Spencer Garrison (West Salem/Northwestern) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in three innings.

Anderson jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just two innings before Lenny Winiarski (Cincinnati/LaSalle) singled home Latkofsky and Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) in the top of the third. Duncan's two-bagger plated Winiarski and Parker Reynolds (Avon), making it a 5-4 game.

Winiarski scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and Bluffton rallied with four more in the sixth despite getting just one hit. However, the Ravens responded with a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and two more in the eighth as Anderson completed the sweep on Sunday evening.

Seth Evans (Ada/OSU-Lima) was saddled with the loss after giving up one run on two hits in the seventh inning. Ruhl continued his hot hitting with three knocks in game two. Winiarski went 2-of-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Reynolds walked four times, while Latkofsky drew three free passes. Duncan drove in a pair of runs. Latkofsky, Winiarski, Reynolds and Towell all crossed the dish twice in game two.

Bluffton will return to action with a trip to Manchester University on Wednesday, March 24, at 4 p.m.
