Alvernia scores three in 8th for 7-4 victory

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Bluffton University baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Alvernia on Wednesday, March 9. The Beavers fell to 1-5 on the season while the Golden Wolves improved to 4-6-1.

Alvernia put a run on the board first in the top of the first, but a Jeff Strayer (Columbus/Thomas Worthington) single scored Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) to tie it up at one apiece. The Golden Wolves scored three in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. The Beavers plated solo tallies in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to knot it up, 4-4, but a strong Alvernia eighth secured their 7-4 victory.

Starting on the mound for Bluffton was freshman Andrew Collinsworth (Westerville/Westerville South), throwing five innings of two strikeout ball. Jacob Daulton (Batavia) and Nathan Young (Copley) both took a turn on the bump, each sending one Golden Wolf back to the dugout with a punchout.

Leading the Beaver offense was Strayer who went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Continuing his hot start was Baumgartner, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Garrett O'Reilly (Galena/Orange) and Nathaniel DeWeese (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) both smacked doubles on Wednesday afternoon. Kenny Schneider (Sunbury/Big Walnut) and DeWeese both chipped in with two hits apiece.

The Beavers take the field again tomorrow, March 10, when they face Muskingum University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Lee County PDC 3. Go Beavers!
