Beavers drop first two games at RHIT

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball team dropped two games at Rose-Hulman on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Rose improved to 13-10 overall and 5-4 in the Heartland Conference, while the Beavers slipped to 9-14 and 4-5 in conference play.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the bottom half of the first frame in game one. Bluffton responded with three tallies in the third as Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont), Justin Maurer (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) and Ezra Deitering (Ottawa/Miller City) all strung together RBI singles. However, the Engineers scored in four straight frames, including another five-spot in the fifth, on the way to a 14-3 mercy-rule victory in seven innings.

Ben Eisenhauer (San Jose, Cal./Leigh) fell to 1-2 after surrendering eight runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out one and walked one.

Towell went 2-of-4 with an RBI and run scored.

The home team out-hit Bluffton just 10-8 in game two, but the Engineers put them together in a 6-0 victory for a Saturday sweep of the Beavers. Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) went 3-of-5 and Towell added two more safeties, giving him four on day one from Rose. His two starts also moved him to the top of the career games played and starts record books with 155 and 154, respectively!

Freshman Riley Reyna (Wellington) gave the Beavers 6.2 innings, but he fell to 1-1 with his first loss of the season. Reyna allowed six runs on eight hits with five punchouts against just one walk. Nathan Young (Copley) worked 1.2 scoreless frames, giving up two hits with a strikeout and walk.

Bluffton will be back at Art Nehf Field for game three of the series at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
