SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Bluffton University baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision at Wittenberg on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Bluffton fell to 9-22 on the season, while Wittenberg improved to 20-12 overall.

The team scored two in the first and three in the third to open up a 5-0 lead before an Ezra Deitering (Ottawa/Miller City) solo homer broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth. Ayden Spriggs (North Lewisburg/Triad) smacked a pinch-hit home run in the eighth and Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) followed with an RBI single that picked up Seth Altman (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson), making it 5-3.

Bluffton was on its way to getting out of the bottom of the eighth unscathed when an untimely error led to five unearned runs for the Tigers. Altman plated Matthew Mitchell (Amelia/McNicholas) with a two-run shot in the ninth, but Wittenberg got out of the jam for a 10-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Baumgartner sent 2-of-5, while Altman scored twice and drove in two runs. Jacob Boelkens (Millbury/Lake) fell to 0-2 after surrendering five runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work. Wyatt Groves (Marengo/Highland) tossed 4.1 innings of two-hit ball and he did not allow a run.

The Beavers head to Hiram College on Tuesday, April 23, for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Terriers.
