Yellow Jackets sting Bluffton with mercy-rule wins

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team lost a pair of Heartland Conference contests to rival Defiance College on a warm Tuesday, April 27, 2021. Bluffton fell to 6-23 and 3-9 in the Heartland Conference, while Defiance improved to 13-20-1 and 5-7 in the HCAC.

Riley Langstaff (Findlay) picked up fellow senior Taylor Steinke (Findlay) with an RBI groundout in the fourth inning and Sydney Bowen (Convoy/Crestview) plated Lily Tate (Mount Gilead/ Northmor) with a run-scoring single an inning later, but the host Yellow Jackets put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in four of five innings en route to the 10-2 victory in game one.

Sophomore Erin Norman (Pleasant Hill/Newton) slipped to 3-8 after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. She struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Tate finished with two of Bluffton's five hits and she scored a run.

Steinke's double to right center leading off the second inning in game two was the only hit Bluffton could muster in the nightcap as Katie McCord (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) took the loss. She allowed eight runs on nine hits in four innings. Defiance posted mercy-rule number two with an 8-0 victory in the 5:30 p.m. game.

Bluffton welcomes Transylvania University for Senior Day on Saturday, May 1. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. at Bluffton Field.
