Beaver suffer 4-0 shutout to Transylvania on Senior Day

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team held Heartland Conference power Transylvania to one goal in the first half, but the Pioneers pulled away with three second half scores for a 4-0 shutout on Saturday, November 1. The Beavers wrapped up their 2008 campaign with a 6-10-1 record overall and a 3-5 mark in the HCAC. The three conference wins are the most ever for the Beavers since joining the HCAC in 1999. Transylvania sealed up a second place finish in the HCAC with a 7-1 mark in conference play following a 1-0 overtime loss to champion Mt. St. Joseph earlier this week.

Bluffton opened the afternoon by honoring its three seniors prior to the kickoff. Four-year letterwinners ALLISON WHITE (Lima/Shawnee), AMY DAHL (Perrysville/Loudonville) and ELYSE BURCKHART (Telford, Penn./Souderton) all capped off their careers at Bluffton after being honored on the field alongside their parents.

Although Transylvania outshot Bluffton 18-1 in the first half, the Beavers limited the visitors to a KATE MCKELWAY score in the fourth minute of the contest. Bluffton struggled to control the ball, but the defense kept the Beavers within striking distance throughout the first 45 minutes of play.

It took Transy just 11 minutes in the second half to break the match open with two more scores, including an own goal and a CASEY PRICE shot that made it 3-0 with just under 35 minutes to play. MICHELLE BOWMAN collected a nice feed from LAUREN DUVALL and hit paydirt with eight minutes on the clock to complete the 4-0 shutout of the home team.

Bluffton freshmen CATIE WHITE (Lima/Central Catholic) and MEGAN DENOI (Bryan) took the only two shots for Bluffton as Transy ended the match with a 28-2 advantage in total shots. The Pioneers put 19 attempts on frame and forced five corner kicks to just one for the Beavers. Freshman KATY WISBY (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) had no time to relax as she collected 15 saves in the loss.

The Beavers six victories during the 2008 season are the most since the 1999 Bluffton women finished 8-9 overall.
