Bluffton moves to 2-1 with OT victory against St. Vincent

September 6, 2009

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team pounded out 25 shots, but it needed two extra periods to knock off St. Vincent in the consolation match of the Marietta Tournament. Sophomore KATY WISBY (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) collected a cross from KOURTNEY LEWIS (Arlington/Riverdale) and found the back of the net less than two minutes into the second extra session for a 2-1 victory on Sunday, September 6, 2009.

After 75 scoreless minutes in the first match of the day at Marietta, Kourtney Lewis put the Beavers on top at the 76:33 mark when she hit from 15 yards out. The Bluffton celebration came to a swift halt as MICHELLE STEPIEN answered for St. Vincent less than three minutes later.

Neither team was able to snap the tie in regulation or during the first period of overtime, but Wisby's score in minute 102 ended the contest with the Beavers claiming a 2-1 victory.

Wisby and Lewis paced Bluffton with eight and six shots, respectively. Freshman MADDIE MOORE (Linn Grove, Ind./South Adams) fired five shots, including four on frame. Catie White added two shots in the contest. MOLLY MARTIN (Brookville) came up with four saves and allowed just one score in over 100 minutes of action. Maddie Moore and ELYSE COKER(Wellington) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts at Marietta during the weekend.

The Beavers finished with a decided 25-9 advantage in shots for the match. Both squads committed 10 fouls and St. Vincent forced five corner kicks, compared to just two for Bluffton.

The Bluffton women return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, when they travel to Huntington. The contest is slated to start at 2 p.m. following the men's match against the Foresters.
