BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team started strong with a 4-1 lead at the half, but the second frame saw both teams add three goals as the Beavers held on to get the win over Trine, 7-4, on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. The Beavers now stand 5-2 on the season while Trine dropped to 0-8. Bluffton's 5-2 mark is the best seven-match start in school history.

The Beavers dominated the first period putting together four goals and holding Trine to only one score. Trine, however, did not get discouraged and matched Bluffton goal for goal in the second period to make the final 7-4. The Beavers' offense proved more dominant, outshooting the Thunder 26 to 10 for the match.

This offensive battle started out strong for Bluffton. The Beavers' KOURTNEY LEWIS(Arlington/Riverdale) scored in just under two minutes, with the assist from senior MEGHAN FORQUER (North Canton/Green). Forquer then continued the scoring for the Beavers, putting one in at 6:15.

Lewis followed Forquer with another goal at the 30:46 mark of the first stanza. Bluffton added one more before half when CATIE WHITE (Lima/Central Catholic) chipped it in from deep, but the Thunder had not given up as they got on the scoreboard before half thanks to a CHRISTINA DILLICH goal.

The second period featured a letdown in the Beaver defense that allowed Trine to find the back of the net three times. The Bluffton offense, however, did not slow down as they also tacked on three more scores. Trine's RACHELLE NEWBERRY tapped the first goal of the second half in with just 15 minutes to play. This was followed shortly by another Bluffton goal off a Trine defender. Trine did not let this stop them as Newberry fired back with another goal.

Bluffton then continued the onslaught with two goals from KATY WISBY (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) after the 80-minute mark. Trine added one more goal before the end of the game by Dillich for the final 7-4 count.

Sophomore Kourtney Lewis led the Beavers with seven shots, three on frame. Following close behind was Wisby with six, two on frame; KIRSTEN EGTS (Rawson/Cory-Rawson) with five, three on frame; and MADDIE MOORE (Linn Grover, Ind./S. Adams) with four, two on target. The rest of the team also chipped in to put the total shots on goal at 13. Forquer added the only assist for the Beavers.

Freshman keeper MOLLY MARTIN (Brookville) finished with six saves in 90 minutes of action. The Beavers forced 11 corner kicks during the match, while Trine managed just two. The fouls for the teams stayed even as each team committed just three.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they host Mt. St. Joseph at Sears Field in the 2009 Heartland Conference opener for both teams. The contest is slated to start at 1 p.m.
