Beavers rally for 3-3 tie with Hiram

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team scored two late goals to salvage a 3-3 tie with visiting Hiram College on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023. Bluffton moved to 1-2-1, while the Terriers, under former Bluffton assistant Kaela Kovanda, stand 1-1-2 following four matches.

Nina McGinn (Marion/Harding) headed home a Brittney Ramirez (Archbold) corner kick less than five minutes in, putting Bluffton up 1-0. Hiram answered back in minute 15 and again in minute 39 as the visitors took a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Terriers pushed their lead to 3-1 at the 49:04 mark, but Bluffton continued to battle. Alyssa Kester (Centerville) found fellow junior Rilynn Kaufman (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) less than 10 minutes later, making it a one-goal deficit.

A Hiram foul in the box set Evie Masters (Arcadia/Van Buren) up for a penalty kick and she buried the equalizer in the lower left corner, knotting the score at three apiece which turned out to be the final score when the horn sounded!

McGinn and Katelyn Burden (Sidney) led the way with four shots apiece. They both put three on frame. Hiram kept Brielle Collier (Anna) busy as the junior picked up 12 saves on Saturday afternoon.

Hiram finished with five more shots (22-17), but the Beavers forced four more corner kicks (6-2).

Bluffton will play its fourth straight home contest on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when the Beavers welcome Asbury University from Kentucky for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
