Bluffton takes down Asbury with two second-half goals

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team scored twice in the second hald en route to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Asbury University on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023. Bluffton improved to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Eagles slipped to 0-2-1.

Asbury fired a way with an 11-5 edge in shots during the first half, including a 6-0 margin on frame, but the score after 45 minutes still showed 0-0 as junior keeper Brielle Collier (Anna) racked up six saves in the half.

The visitors finally cracked the scoring column just over four minutes into the second stanza when Deidra Long put the Eagles up 1-0. Less than seven minutes later, Madison Ellerbrock (Leipsic/Miller City) picked the Asbury keeper's pocket and sent the equalizer into the back of the net.

Senior Katelyn Burden (Sidney) took advantage of a loose ball in the box at the 63:57 mark and the Beaver defense did the rest as Bluffton stunned Asbury in a match that only 14 players made it into the scorebook!

Asbury finished with a 25-8 edge in shots, including 15-2 on frame. Fortunately, both of Bluffton's crossed the goal line and Collier did her part with a whopping 14 saves!

The Eagles forced two more corner kicks (8-6) and Bluffton was whistled for two more fouls (6-4). Nina McGinn (Marion/Harding) led the Beavers with three shots.

Bluffton will travel to Muskingum for a double feature with the men on Saturday, Sept. 16. The women's match is slated for 1 p.m.
