MSJ scores late for 2-0 shutout at Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the class of the Heartland Conference on Wednesday night and came up just short as Mount St. Joseph needed over 70 minutes to crack the scoreboard. The Lions scored off a corner and then used a free kick to put it away with a 2-0 victory over the Beavers. Bluffton dipped to 2-8-1 overall and 0-3 in the Heartland Conference, while MSJ upped its mark to 5-4-2 and 3-0 in the HCAC.

Despite being outshot 12-1 through the first stanza, Bluffton battled to a scoreless tie when the teams broke for halftime. It was still 0-0 when MSJ used a corner kick to go up 1-0 in minute 71. The shots were slighly more balanced in the second half, 11-5 in favor of the Lions, but Bluffton was unable to hit paydirt on Wednesday night.

Nina McGinn (Marion/Harding) fired four of Bluffton's six shots. Junior Brielle Collier (Anna) was outstanding between the pipes, flushing away 14 shots while keeping the visitors out of the goal for over 70 minutes.

MSJ finished with a 23-6 advantage in shots, including 16-1 on frame. The Lions forced all six corner kicks, while Bluffton was whistled for two more fouls, 7-5.

Bluffton welcomes rival Franklin College for a 1 p.m. kickoff at the Sears Complex on Saturday, Oct. 7, as part of a women's and men's double feature while the football team is hosting Hanover College on the east side of Salzman Stadium!
