Beavers compete at Ohio Northern Duals

ADA, Ohio - The Bluffton University track and field team traveled to Ohio Northern to compete in the Northern Spring Duals on Tuesday, April 10, 2007. The Beavers' men's and women's squads performed well as they went up against stiff competition all day. Both squads also had outstanding individual performances throughout the day, taking a number of 1st place finishes.

Freshman JASON FISHER (Rockford/Parkway) led the way for the men's squad as he again demonstrated his prowess in the throwing events with three finishes in the top two. Fisher took top honors, placing first in the men's javelin with a throw of 46.64 meters. He also placed 2nd in both the shot put and discus events, posting a distance of 13.88 meters in the shot put, and 41.39 meters in the discus throw.

Senior SHANDON NORTH (Galion/Galion) continued his dominance in the 400 meter dash, placing 1st with a time of 50.96 seconds. Junior TYLER FAIRCHILD (Toledo/Whitmer) and freshman COLLIN WAGNER (Pettisville/Pettisville) ran strong in the 800 meter run with Fairchild finishing 2nd with a time of 2:05.01, and Wagner coming in 3rd with a time of 2:09.25.

The Beavers also had a strong showing in the 5,000 meter run thanks in part to juniorsHILLARY SHILOSIO (Eldoret, Kenya) and MIKE KOCH (Liberty Center/Liberty Center). Shilosio took 2nd place in the event with a time of 18:05.08 while Koch came in 3rd with a time of 19:46.03.

Senior RUSTIN PICKETT (Urbana/Urbana) rounded out the men's individuals who placed in the top three in their respective events. He took 3rd place in the long jump with a leap of 5.60 meters.

For the women, junior SARAH HUMPHREY (Upper Sandusky/Upper Sandusky) and freshman SARAH BINKLEY (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) both took top honors in their individual events to lead the women's squad on the day. Binkley placed 1st in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.88 seconds, and Humphrey took 1st in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:30.31.

ASHLEY SMITH (Delta/Delta) placed high in two of her events for the Beavers. Smith took 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 4.52 meters and she placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.46 seconds.

Two-sport standout sophomore CHANTEL MANGRUM (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian) ran a strong race in the women's 400 meter dash to round out the top finishers for the Beavers in the running events as she placed 2nd with a time of 1:07.65.

KARYN DAVIS (Liberty Center/Liberty Center) and teammate ANNALEE KAPLAN(Hilliard/Darby) each placed in the top three of one throwing event on the day. Kaplan took 2nd in the discus throw with a launch of 27.38 meters, and Davis took 3rd in the shot put with a toss of 10.33 meters which rounded out the top finishers for the women's squad at the Northern Spring Duals.

Members of the Bluffton track and field team will travel to Delaware, Ohio, for the Division III All-Ohio Outdoor Championships this Saturday, April 14, 2007. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
