Beavers compete in the Spartan Classic at Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Bluffton University track and field team traveled to Manchester College to compete at the Spartan Classic on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

The women's team had three first place finishers, including a victory in the 3000 meter run by SARAH HUMPHREY (Upper Sandusky/Upper Sandusky) with a time of 11:03.27, breaking Lauren Borga's school record by 20 seconds. ASHLEY SMITH (Delta/Delta) set a new personal record when she crossed the line first in the 400 meter dash (1:01.13), while MEGAN KOCH (Elida/Elida) placed second with a time of 1:03.57. Koch, who was victorious in the 200 meter dash, also set a new personal record in the 200 meters with a time of 27.54 seconds.

SARAH BINKLEY (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) took fifth in the 100 meter dash (14.48) and the women's 4x100 meter relay team, consisting of Smith, Koch, Binkley and MEGAN FORQUER(North Canton/Green), finished third with a time of 53.33 seconds. Koch had another personal record in the high jump (1.47 m) and took fifth place.

KARYN DAVIS (Liberty Center/Liberty Center) placed fifth in the shot put (10.82 m) and freshman PAIGE CORESSEL (Wauseon/Wauseon) took sixth in the javelin with a throw of 22.10 meters.

JASON FISHER (Rockford/Parkway) won the shot put as he finished first among all of the collegiate athletes (14.07 m). Fisher took third in the shot put with a toss of 43.91 meters and seventh in the hammer with a throw of 44.01 meters. Fisher also finished fourth in the javelin (41.97 m) while JARED AUER (Curtice/Genoa Local) placed second with a throw of 44.23 meters.

REX BROWN (Wauseon/Pettisville) went for fifth place in the javelin (41.76 m). ROB JOHNSON (Columbus/Marion Franklin) grabbed the fifth spot in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.27 seconds. BEN ALTHAUS (Delhi, NY/Delhi) crossed the line fifth in the 400 meter dash (54.15).

The men's squad took first in the 4x800 meter relay (8:32). 

The fourth place 4x100 meter relay team, consisting of Brown, Johnson, STEVE HAVENS(Fremont/Lakota), and MICHAEL TIMPE (Swanton/Swanton), finished with a time of 46.27 seconds.

The Bluffton University track and field team returns to action when the Beavers travel to Anderson, Indiana, to compete in the HCAC Championships on Friday, April 25, 2008. The events are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
