More records fall as Hoosier-Buckeye Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Rose-Hulman for the 2009 Hoosier-Buckeye Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21. The Beavers were among seven HCAC schools to take part in the annual event. Bluffton took sixth place out of seven teams for both the women and the men. Franklin edged out Manchester for the women's title, while Rose-Hulman dominated on the men's side.

Junior JASON FISHER (Rockford/Parkway) put in another strong performance in the throw events. Fisher placed third in the weight throw, scoring six points with a toss of 46-02.75. A first place throw in the men's shot put by Fisher accounted for 10 points and his throw of 49-01.50 established a new school record.

In the women's weight throw, KAYLA PICKERING (Jamestown/Greenview) took eighth place and one point with a throw of 36-03.50. Pickering also placed in sixth place in the shot put, and KARYN DAVIS (Liberty Center) finished in fifth place with a distance of 35-10.00.

Senior ASHLEY SMITH (Delta/Pike-Delta-York) also put in a strong individual performance. The senior took first place in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 1:01.71 which was good for a new school record. It is the second time in as many weeks that she has shattered the school record for that event. Smith also placed third in the long jump with a distance of 15-05.50.

The third school record was broken by ROBERT JOHNSON (Columbus/Marion Franklin) in the 200 meter dash. Johnson placed second with a time of 23.09. He also finished second in the 55 meter dash. In the women's 55 meter dash, KATY WISBY (Lancaster/Bloom Carroll) came in sixth with a time of 8.23.

SARAH BINKLEY (Bluffton/Cory Rawson) finished seventh out of 13 in the one mile run, scoring two points with a time of 5:57.30.

The Hoosier-Buckeye Invitational marked the end of the indoor season for Bluffton. The Beavers will now have almost a month to prepare for the outdoor campaign. The team travels to Defiance on March 21 to compete in the Dick Small Invitational for the first outdoor event of the season.
