Ashley Smith and Jason Fisher dominate at Dick Small Invite

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Defiance College on March 21, 2009, for the Dick Small Invitational. The women's team placed sixth of seven and the men's team placed fourth out of nine teams.

Freshman HEATHER SMITH (Elkhart, Ind/Concord) placed ninth, one short of scoring points for the Beavers in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:35.09. ASHLEY SMITH (Delta/Pike-Delta-York) scored 10 points for Bluffton in the long jump, as she finished in first place with a jump of 15-05.50. Smith added another first place finish and 10 more points in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:28.92. Also scoring for the women's team was KAYLA PICKERING(Jamestown/Greenview) who took eighth in the javelin with a throw of 84-04 feet.

ROBERT JOHNSON (Columbus/Marion-Franklin) ran a time of 11.19 in the 100 meter dash which was good for second place and eight points. Johnson also ran in the 200 meter dash, finishing third with a time of 22.94. MICHAEL TIMPE (Swanton) placed eighth in the 800 meter run, which was good for one point with a time of 2:10.47. Michael Timpe finished in fifth place in the triple jump, scoring four points with a distance of 36-05.75. Bluffton's 4x400 squad finished seventh with a time of 3:43.92. The relay team, consisting of ANDREW CHAFFEE(Clarkston, Mich.), Michael Timpe, BRIAN TIMPE (Wauseon/Pike-Delta-York) and KEVIN HICKMAN (Centerburg) scored three points for their efforts.

Junior JASON FISHER (Rockford/Parkway) had another strong day in the throws. Fisher placed fifth in the hammer throw, scoring four points with a throw of 154-11. In the discus Fisher finished in first place with a toss of 137-04. Both Jason Fisher and BRYAN HECKATHORN(Hartville/Lake) placed in the shot put. Heckathorn took fifth with a throw of 37-10.00, while Fisher picked up his second first place finish with a throw of 47-03.75.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday, March 28, when Bluffton travels to Cedarville for the Yellow Jacket Open.
