Jason Fisher provisionally qualifies for NCAA finals in hammer throw

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University men's and women's track team took part in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, April 24, 2009. The men's team scored a total of 52 points, which put them in eighth place, while the women totaled 45.5 points for eighth as well.

Bluffton's JASON FISHER (Rockford/Parkway) had an outstanding day as he placed in all four of his events. Fisher won the hammer with a throw of 172-01, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships, and took second in the shot put with a toss of 48-03.25. He also produced six points in the discus with a throw of 148-07 for third place in addition to generating two points in the javelin (154-10).
 
ROBERT JOHNSON (Columbus/Marion Franklin) claimed first and 10 points in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.00. Johnson also took fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.77.BEN ALTHAUS (Delhi, N.Y./Delhi) finished fifth in the 400 meter dash (51.91). The men's 4x400 team, consisting of Johnson, Althaus, KEVIN HICKMAN (Centerburg) and MICHAEL TIMPE (Swanton), placed third with a time of 3:29.29.
 
ASHLEY SMITH (Delta/Pike-Delta-York) won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.58, while grabbing a third place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.16. Smith and KATY WISBY (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) took fourth and seventh place in the long jump, respectively, with Smith jumping 16-06.50 feet and Wisby going 15-11.00.
 
Smith and Wisby, along with SARAH BINKLEY (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) and GRACE NEEDLER (Columbus Grove), claimed fourth in the 4x100 meter relay to pick up five points for the Beavers. Bluffton's KOURTNEY LEWIS (Arlington/Riverdale) tied for sixth place in the high jump with a height of 4-10.25.
 
 
KARYN DAVIS (Liberty Center) took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 36-02, while teammate KAYLA PICKERING (Jamestown/Greenview) came in third in the javelin with a throw of 106-07. HEATHER SMITH ( Elkhart , Ind./Concord) picked up two points for her seventh place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 13:11.71.
