Bluffton falls 3-2 to MSJ

BLUFFTON, Ohio - MSJ outlasted the Beavers as the Bluffton University volleyball team lost a five-set slugfest (25-20, 24-26, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11) to the Lions on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. Bluffton slipped to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference after being up 23-21 and 24-23 in the fourth set, while The Mount improved to 2-8 and 1-0 in the HCAC.

Two Beavers made it into double-digit kills on the night, freshman Kendra Parmenter (Grove City) with 13 spikes and sophomore Kristyn Hovest (Gilboa/Pandora-Gilboa) with 11 kills. Middle hitters Brooke Distel (Carey) and Jenny Brown (St. Marys/Memorial) helped out with eight kills apiece.

Freshman setter Mackenzie Lauber (Mansfield/Madison) dished out 40 assists for the Beavers. The home team struggled defensively with only one player reaching double digits in digs despite going five sets. Junior Lindsay Krohn (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) earned 11 shovels while senior libero Heather Schierer (Crescent Springs, Ky./St. Henry) and junior Hailey Phillips (Malinta/Patrick Henry) both added eight digs. 

Behind the serving line, two Beavers added three killers apiece, Krohn and Phillips. Junior Kyleigh Whitsel (Sheffield Lake/Brookeside) helped out with two aces of her own. 

On Friday, the Beavers head south to Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., for the OAC/HCAC Challenge where they will take on Ohio Northern University, Baldwin-Walace, Capital, and Muskingum.
