BLUFFTON, Ohio - Two Bluffton University baseball players were recently honored as second team All-Mideast Region by the ABCA for their play on the diamond this spring. Senior outfielder RIORDAN MCCLAIN (Upper Sandusky/Upper Sandusky) and sophomore second baseman TONY MOORE (Elida/Elida) were two of the nine Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference players named All-Mideast Region.

HCAC Player of the Year ZAC BIRELY and closer MITCH WATERS, both of Manchester College, were named first team All-Region. Bluffton standouts McClain and Moore were joined on the second team by pitcher MARCUS MILLER, the Manchester ace this season. Third basemen BRYAN VASSE (Transylvania) and NATHAN ROBERTS (Franklin), along with Spartan outfielder BROCK TREESH and shortstop RYAN SEAL, all earned third team honors this season.

Fifteen players earned ABCA first team recognition, including the Region's Division III Player of the Year, Wooster designated hitter KURT KAPFERER, and Pitcher of the Year, Marietta's MIKE EISENBERG. Marietta's BRIAN BREWER was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. A total of 18 players earned second team recognition while 18 others were named third team selections. First team ABCA All-Mideast Region recipients will be forwarded for All-American consideration.

Senior Riordan McClain, who led the Beavers with a .405 batting average, moved from shortstop to the outfield this season and also joined the starting rotation as he picked up two victories on the mound. He was 53-of-131 at the plate with nine doubles, three triples and two home runs. He finished the season with 21 RBI's, 33 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, a .565 slugging percentage and a .497 on-base percentage. His 53 hits surpassed the previous record of 50 set in 1988.

In conference contests, McClain hit .370 (27-of-73) with 12 runs scored, 10 RBI's and five doubles. He had a .507 slugging percentage and a .447 on-base percentage against HCAC foes. For his efforts, McClain was one of three Beavers named first team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

For his career, McClain hit .298 (116-of-389) with 77 runs scored and 49 runs batted in. He finished with a slugging percentage of .424 and an on-base percentage of .380. McClain stole 24 bases, cracked 22 doubles and capped his career with five dingers having played in 128 games, 111 as a starter.

Sophomore second baseman Tony Moore had a breakout season on his was to honorable mention All-HCAC honors for 2006. He hit .401 with a .474 slugging percentage and .438 on-base percentage. His 61 hits shattered the previous record of 50 hits in a season by Matt Henderson in 1988. Moore scored a school record 38 runs and drove in 23 for the Beavers. He tied the school record with 17 steals and put together a 19-game hitting streak

Moore hit .337 (28-83) in HCAC action with seven doubles, 17 runs scored and six stolen bases. He finished the conference season with a .422 slugging percentage and .368 on-base percentage. In addition to earning honorable mention All-HCAC honors for 2006, Moore was named the Heartland Conference Player of the Month for April.

After two years as a Beaver, Moore has collected 79 hits on his way to a .359 batting average. He has scored 51 runs, knocked in 29 and stolen 24 bases. Moore currently has a career .409 slugging percentage and .408 on-base percentage. He has played in 66 games for Bluffton, including 54 as a starter.

The Beavers ended the season with a 17-21 overall record. Bluffton tied for second place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a mark of 10-11.
