Beavers snap nine-game skid at Hanover

HANOVER, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball went on the road for the first time this season on April 20, 2007, and came away with a 6-1 victory over Hanover College which snapped a nine-game losing streak. The Beavers improved to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in the HCAC while the Panthers fell to 11-17, with a 2-8 mark in the Heartland Conference.

Junior ace TIM KAY (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity), who was in control all afternoon, kept the Panthers scoreless through the first seven innings, keeping Bluffton in the game until the Beavers' bats found their rhythm late in the contest. The Beavers held a slim 1-0 lead after six innings thanks to an unearned run in the top of the fifth.

The Beavers plated two runs in the seventh as RYAN BAIGHTEL (Wapakoneta/Wapakoneta) opened with a single and moved to third on consecutive groundouts to first base. Kay knocked in Baightel and he came around to score on CURTIS SCHROEDER'S (Shelby/Shelby) two-out double.

In the top of the eighth, Bluffton took advantage of two free passes and some timely hitting as the Beavers plated three runs. CODY MCPHERSON (Northwood/Lake) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. A GREG SIGG (Maumee/Maumee) single put runners on the corners for Baightel who picked up McPherson with his sacrifice fly to center. Following a Tony Moore single which loaded the bases, COREY CONN (London/London) ripped a two-run double, giving the Beavers a 6-0 lead.

Hanover scored its only run of the game in the home half of the eighth when BARNETT plated GILLIN with his sacrifice fly to left after a passed ball which had left Gillin only 90 feet from home plate.

Kay (1-3) gave up only one unearned run as he delighted the Beaver faithful in Hanover with his second straight complete nine-inning game. He scattered eight hits and struck out six Panthers while issuing four walks on the day.

Moore, McPherson and Kay collected two hits for the Beavers while Conn drove in two runs in the victory.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday, April 21, when they face off against the Panthers in a doubleheader at Hanover. The first game is slated to start at 12 p.m.
