PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team split its first two games of the 2010 campaign on Sunday, March 7. In the opener the Beavers went to extra innings before falling to the John Jay Bloodhounds 5-4 in the 10th frame. Bluffton rebounded to claim a 5-3 decision over Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington thanks to a four-run seventh against the Quakers.
John Jay 5, Bluffton 4 (10 innings)
Freshman Nick Rodesky (Bowling Green) got the season started for Bluffton, throwing six strong innings of three-hit ball. He struck out eight Bloodhound batters. The Beaver hurlers pitched well but ended up being out dueled by John Jay's Camacho who went all 10 innings for the victory. The Beavers finished with six hits for the game, distributed between three players. Brennan Bauman (Milford) went 2-of-4, including a triple. Nick Broyles (Toledo/Whitmer) also went 2-for-4 and he scored a pair of runs. Cory Stephens (Lima/Bath) rapped a pair of hits with a run scored and an RBI. John Jay won on an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the 10th following a close play at the plate.
Bluffton 5, Wilmington 3
Sophomore Kelly Barnes (Toledo/Toledo Christian) followed Rodesky's game one start with a superb six-inning effort in Bluffton's second game of the day. He allowed just one run on four hits while fanning four. Tyler Stephenson came through in the clutch when Bluffton needed him the most, driving in two runs on a bases loaded single up the middle which snapped a 2-2 tie. Nick Broyles and Michael Knorr (Pickerington/North) both drove in runs. Stephen Torres (Lima/Juan Diego) stole a pair of bases and fellow senior Cody McPherson (Northwood/Millbury/Lake) worked the final two innings of one-hit ball for a save.
The Beavers continue with a doubleheader against Medaille College on Monday, March 8. The first contest is slated for 9 a.m.
