Bluffton splits with Medaille

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team split with Medaille College on Monday, March 8, 2010. The Beavers survived a three-run seventh for a 4-3 victory in the lidlifter before Medaille earned the split with a 7-3 win in game two. The first ended in thrilling fashion with a walk-off hit by Nick Broyles (Toledo/Whitmer) in the bottom of the eighth. 

Bluffton 4, Medaille 3 (8 innings)
 
Adrian Fritch (Edon) started the game for the Beavers and was lights out until exiting in the 6th inning. He struck out eight and walked just one while tossing five innings of shutout ball. The offensive standouts were Steven Torres (Lima/Juan Diego) and Tyler Stephenson (Springfield/Northeastern) who pounded two hits each. Both had doubles in the game and scored. Josh Mendoza (Gibsonburg/Fremont Ross) came through off the bench for Bluffton with an RBI single down the left field line. The game went one extra frame until Nick Broyles plated Cody McPherson (Northwood/Millbury Lake) with his one-out single to right field. Stephenson worked the final three innings for his first victory of the season.
 
Medaille 7, Bluffton 4
 
Jordan Kruse (Napoleon) gave Bluffton a chance for the sweep with five solid innings to start game two. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits with 10 strikeouts and just two free passes in his first collegiate action on the mound. The Beavers battled back from a 3-1 deficit, thanks to a two-run single by Mike Knorr (Pickerington/North). Freshman Miles Richardson (Granville/Newark Catholic) paced the Bluffton offense with two of Bluffton's six hits along with a stolen base. The Beavers tied the game in the top of the 6th, however, Medaille put up a four-spot in the home half to help nail down the split. Brennan Bauman (Milford) took the loss after giving up four runs on three hits. Torres scored two runs for Bluffton.

Bluffton will play a pair of games for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. The Beavers are slated to start their first contest against Ohio Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
