Bluffton takes game one in extras

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team saw its bats explode during a 13-12 eight-inning win over Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Bluffton scored its 13 runs on 15 hits. However, OWU responded with a 14-3 victory in the nightcap, securing a split with the Beavers.

Bluffton 13, Ohio Wesleyan 12 (8 innings)

 

Bluffton jumped out to an 11-1 lead thanks to an 8-run 4th inning that included eight hits. The Beavers plated seven of the runs after two outs were recorded by the Battling Bishops. With two down, Kyle Trainer (Mechanicsburg) singled to right. Nick Broyles (Toledo/Whitmer), Stephen Torres (Lima/Juan Diego) and Tyler Stephenson (Springfield/Northeastern) followed with consecutive doubles. Cody McPherson (Northwood/Millbury Lake) drove home Stephenson with a single to center and two walks later, freshman Michael Knorr (Pickerington/North) cleaned up the bases with a two-bagger to left center.

 

Ohio Wesleyan rallied to knot the game at 12 with seven runs in an error marred sixth frame. A scoreless seventh sent the game to extra innings where Cody McPherson came across the plate thanks to an error following a wild pitch on strike three to Mike Knorr.

 

 

Ryan Leugers (Botkins) allowed seven runs, just one earned, on nine hits in five innings on the hill. McPherson evened his record at 1-1 following three innings of relief. Nick Broyles went 3-of-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Mike Knorr had a breakout game, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI including his three-run double. Stephenson, McPherson and Miles Richardson (Granville/Newark Catholic) all tallied two hits while McPherson, Richardson and Trainer all scored two times. Stephenson drove in three runs.

 

Ohio Wesleyan 14, Bluffton 3

 

Ohio Wesleyan's bats did not cool off in the second game as the Bishops scored in six of the seven innings. Bluffton had only five hits compared Ohio Wesleyan's 14 safeties. Freshmen Tyler Gibson (Sylvania/Southview) got his first start of the 2010 season, pitching three innings and giving up five runs while striking out two batters. Stephen Torres score two times and stole a base. McPherson and Seth Harshberger (Elyria) both drove in runs for the Beavers in game two.

Bluffton returns to action with a single game against Junaita College on Wednesday, March 10. The contest is slated to start at 5 p.m.
