Beavers drop 2-0 decision to #8 Marietta College

March 8, 2011

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida - The Bluffton University baseball team received an outstanding performance on the mound from sophomore Tyler Gibson (Sylvania/Southview) in the Beavers' 2-0 setback at the hands of Marietta College on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. The Pioneers improved to 7-1 while Bluffton dipped to 3-3.

Marietta broke into the scoring column with an RBI double by Tim Saunders in the top of the fourth. Saunders knocked in the other Marietta run with a sacrifice fly to right two frames later for a 2-0 lead.

Bluffton rapped seven safeties compared to eight by the Pioneers, but the Beavers were unable to cash in against the #8 team in the country. Kyle Niermann (Napoleon) extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a single in the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Trainer (Mechanicsburg) paced the Beavers with two base hits. Casey Levens, who went 4-of-4 for Marietta, scored the only runs of the contest.

Tyler Gibson was masterful on the mound, allowing seven hits and just two runs in eight innings of work. He fanned five and did not allow a free pass. Ben Roeschley (Graymont, IL/Flanagan) worked a scoreless ninth for the Beavers.

The competition does not get any easier when the Beavers meet #1 Heidelberg University at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2011.
