Transy opens series with Saturday sweep

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Bluffton University baseball team was swept by host Transylvania University on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Transy improved to 22-6 and 9-3 in the Heartland Conference, while Bluffton fell to 9-18 and 4-9 in the HCAC.

Transy scored three in the first, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth on the way to a commanding 9-3 lead in game one. Back-to-back singles by Matthew Mitchell (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) and Seth Altman (Amelia/McNicholas) followed by a three-run bomb for Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) trimmed the deficit to 9-3, but Transy came back with one of its own in the home half and two in the eighth for a 12-3 victory in the lidlifter.

Freshman Riley Reyna (Wellington) took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits in five innings on the hill. He struck out five and walked three.

Baumgartner went 3-of-4 with all three RBI for the Beavers. Ezra Deitering (Ottawa/Miller City) added two safeties in game one.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game two and it added a pair of tallies in the third for a 3-0 spread. A Transy sacrifice fly in the sixth put the Pioneers up 4-0 with three innings to play. Bluffton was unable to crack the code in game two as the Pioneers wrapped up the Saturday sweep with a 5-0 shutout.

Ben Eisenhauer (San Jose, Cal./Leigh) slipped to 1-3 after a solid 5.1 innings in game two. He gave up four runs in 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. Jaden Jaques (New Palestine, Ind.) and Brody Symsick (Galion) combined on 2.2 innings of one-run relief for the Beavers.

Bluffton and Transylvania will line up one more time on Sunday, April 14. The first pitch of game three is slated for 1 p.m.
