Chatham sweeps Beavers on opening day

Chatham sweeps Beavers on opening day

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team dropped a pair of low-scoring games to Chatham on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The Cougars took game one, 3-2, and then they capped the sweep with a 3-1 victory under the lights.

Junior Ayden Spriggs (North Lewisburg/Triad) doubled home Justin Maurer (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Chatham made it 2-1 in the second thanks to a Bluffton error and an RBI double.

Maurer's double to right center in the sixth plated sophomore Drew Snipes (Pickerington/North), but Chatham walked it off an inning later with a double and a sac bunt throw that went awry.

Both teams struggled to put the bat on the ball, combining for just six hits, three apiece, in the lidlifter. Sophomore Riley Reyna (Wellington) was masterful in his six innings on the bump. He allowed just two runs, one earned, on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior Wyatt Groves (Marengo/Highland) took the hard luck loss when Chatham scored the game winner in the home seventh.

After four scoreless frames to open game two, Chatham plated all it would need with three tallies in the fifth inning. The Cougars took advantage of three hits, an error, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly.

Two Chatham miscues, a wild pitch and a Brandon North (Hilliard/Bradley) sacrifice fly that picked up Spriggs made it 3-1, but the Beavers came up empty in the seventh as Chatham and Head Coach Nic Rush, a former Bluffton assistant, wrapped up the sweep.

Senior Nathan Young (Copley) took the loss after allowing three runs, just one earned, on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. He struck out four and walked one.

Bluffton has a quick turnaroud as the Beavers take on North Central at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 3, 2025.
