Bluffton drops 3-2 home opener to Albion

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University baseball team struggled to score runs in a 3-2 loss to Albion College in the 2025 home opener on a beautiful Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Bluffton fell to 2-7, while the Britons improved to 3-6 on the season.

Albion took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third thanks to a pair of hits, a Bluffton miscue and a sacrifice fly. The visitors pushed it to 3-0 with a solo run in the fifth frame.

Bluffton finally dented the scoreboard with two tallies in the sixth. With two outs, Justin Maurer (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) singled to center and fellow senior Evan Houseman (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) doubled to right center, putting two runners in scoring position. Freshman Tyler Forest (Harrison/LaSalle) battled his way to a two-run single up the middle, making it a one-run game.

The Beavers had four baserunners over the final three innings, but Albion closed it out for the 3-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Graduate student Jaden Jaques (New Palestine, Ind.) went five innings, allowing just three runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and no free passes. Sophomore Matthew Becher (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) was nearly unhittable in his four shutout innings of relief. He struck out four with two walks and allowed just one hit.

Forest, who drove in both runs, and sophomore Drew Snipes (Pickerington/North) both smacked two hits for the Beavers.

Maurer has etched his name at the top of the career record books twice in the past two games, moving up to first all-time with 783 putouts and 813 total chances!

Bluffton is back in action on Saturday, March 15, when the Beavers travel to Capital University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
