BLUFFTON, Ohio - Ryan Sabin, a senior wide receiver on the Bluffton University football team, was among 147 candidates this fall for the National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Sabin, a special education major from Canal Winchester, Ohio, was one of only 41 candidates from NCAA Division III teams and one of just two from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. He is currently leading the Beavers with 370 receiving yards on 21 receptions (two touchdowns) for a 17.6 yards per catch average
Nominated by their schools-which are limited to one nominee each-candidates for the awards must be seniors or graduate students in their final year of eligibility; have grade point averages of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; have outstanding football ability as evidenced by being first-team players or significant contributors to their teams; and have demonstrated leadership and citizenship. The group is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of media members, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
Sabin, a Canal Winchester High School graduate, has been instrumental in Bluffton's recent resurgence on the football field. He has been a part of a senior class that has steadily improved, going from a winless campaign during his freshman season to a second place finish in the HCAC as a junior. The five conference wins in 2011 were the most since 2000, when the Beavers were 5-1 and conference co-champions.
