Colt Cunningham named first team All-HCAC

BLUFFTON, Ohio - Senior COLT CUNNINGHAM (Powell/Worthington Christian) capped off his outstanding career at Bluffton University by being named first team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Two of his senior running mates, AARON TAYLOR (Antwerp) and NICK WILSON (Continental), along with junior point guard JOSH EICHAR (North Baltimore) received honorable mention All-HCAC acclaim by the coaches following the 2008-09 season
 

Senior guard Colt Cunningham collected his third consecutive All-HCAC honor, earning first team in 2008-09 after two years of honorable mention recognition. His 15.2 points per game placed him seventh in the Heartland Conference. A superb free throw shooter, Cunningham knocked down 69-of-82 (84.1 percent) at the stripe which was fourth in the conference. He also hit 59-for-161 (36.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The three-year starter wrapped up his career 18th on Bluffton's all-time scoring list with 1,116 points. For his career, Cunningham drained 147-of-410 three pointers (35.9 percent) while being lights out at the foul line, 225-for-269 (83.9 percent). He also dished out 141 assists and pulled down 199 rebounds.

Making his first appearance on the honorable mention All-HCAC team is Aaron Taylor. The senior scorer (13.6 PPG in 2008-09) ranked sixth in the HCAC with a 57.0 shooting percentage (126-of-221). He was deadly from distance, 29-of-60 (48.3 percent), which led the HCAC and he buried 72-of-85 (84.7 percent) at the line. His free throw percentage was third-best in the conference. For his career, Taylor made 229-of-446 field goals (55.8 percent), 47-of-102 threes (46.1 percent) and 157-of-187 free throws. He finished with 702 points, 201 rebounds and 136 career assists at Bluffton.

 
 

Senior post Nick Wilson also picked up his first All-HCAC postseason award. The honorable mention All-Heartland Conference selection did it from outside the arc as well as inside the paint. He averaged 10.3 PPG and 4.0 RPG during his final campaign. Wilson went 80-of-172 from the field (46.5 percent), including 28-of-85 (32.9 percent) on triples. He was 49-of-64 (76.6 percent) from the foul line this season. For his career, Wilson made 247-of-508 field goal attempts (48.6 percent). A career 34.7 percent shooter from outside (58-for-167), he finished with 681 points and 307 boards.

Floor general Josh Eichar once again provided Bluffton with outstanding all-around play. His 48 steals were third-best in the HCAC and he ranked eighth in the conference with 73 dimes. The junior was 56-of-110 from the field (50.9 percent) and 48-for-64 (75.0 percent) at the charity stripe. He led the Beavers with 104 rebounds and scored 6.5 PPG while defending against the premier scoring guards in the Heartland Conference.

 

Bluffton hosted its second Heartland Conference tournament game in school history, placing fourth in the regular season. It marked the second time in three years that the Beavers have qualified for the HCAC tourney since it went to a limited format.

The 2008-09 Bluffton University men's basketball seniors ended their careers as the winningest class ever at Bluffton. They finished with a record of 63-41 during the past four years for an overall winning percentage of .606. The winning percentage bested the class of 2007-08 which won 59 percent of their games and the 63 wins is one more than the previous best which the 2007-08 class finished with a year ago. The Beavers won their fifth consecutive McDonald's of Bluffton Holiday Tournament this season, adding to the record established a year ago.
