Beavers take advantage of opportunitites in 4-0 shutout of Thiel

BLUFFTON, Ohio -The Bluffton University men's soccer team defeated the Tomcats of Thiel, 4-0, at Bluffton on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. The Beavers picked up their first win to move their record to 1-4-1 while the Tomcats fell to 3-4-1 with the defeat. The shutout avenged Bluffton's 5-1 loss at Thiel a season ago.

Bluffton produced 11 shots total, which were evenly spread throughout the entire team. Bluffton scored two quick goals with MICHAEL TIMPE (Swanton) chipping one in at 6:50 followed by a second from Timpe at 10:13.
 
The Beavers made it 3-0 in the first period thanks to a score by JASON HUDSON (Troy) at the 29:54 mark. The Beavers added their last goal of the match 13 minutes into the second period when LOUIE CANCASCI (Twinsburg) found the back of the net. The Beavers managed five shots on frame of which four were goals, while the Tomcats put up seven of its nine shots on goal.
 
The Beavers were whistled for 13 fouls, three more than the Tomcats, but Thiel managed to pick up three yellow cards late in the second half. Each team forced three corner kicks in the match. Bluffton's starting goalkeeper, BRIAN GOOD (Elida/Elida), collected six saves and DAN SAVILLE (Toledo) picked up one. NOLAN PHELPS (Monroe/Lemon-Monroe) and ANDREW JOHNSON (Vienna, WV) chipped in with assists for the Bluffton.

The Beavers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Mount Union. The contest is slated to start at 4 p.m.
