BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's soccer team struggled to put together a consistent offense in their loss to Heidelberg on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010. Both teams started slowly, but the Student Princes managed to punch in two tallies before the end of the half. The visitors dominated the second half, adding another four goals as both team substituted liberally during the final stanza. The win pushed Heidelberg to 6-3 overall, while Bluffton fell to 2-6 on the season.
The Princes managed to pound in their first goal with just over 10 minutes left in the half. The goal by COLE TONTI was set up by GAVIN MCCARTHY. Heidelberg took advantage of the momentum as they quickly added another goal just two minutes later from CORY BUHRMAN. This was the end of the scoring for the half as Heidelberg led Bluffton 2-0 after the first 45 minutes of action.
Heidelberg opened up the second half with two goals less than a minute apart, both knocked in by GRANT BECK. The Student Princes then continued with their powerful offense as they pushed another goal across at the 65:47 mark. The Princes knocked in their final goal with just under 10 minutes left in the match. Bluffton continued to work hard till the final horn sounded, forcing two corner kicks and taking a pair of shots during the last 10 minutes, but the Beavers could not find the back of the net in the 6-0 shutout.
Bluffton University finished with 10 shots (two on target), while Heidelberg put up 27 (17 on frame). The Beavers forced two corner kicks, while the Princes countered with four. Senior BRIAN GOOD (Elida) recorded nine saves in the loss. JACOB GRAHAM (Gomer/Elida) led the offense with four shots, one on frame. DILLAN SHUMAKER (Springfield/Shawnee) added another two attempts for the Beavers. Bluffton and Heidelberg were called for 13 and 10 fouls, respectively.
The Bluffton men will host Transylvania in an HCAC matchup on Saturday, October 2. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
