Earlham takes down Bluffton 4-1

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's soccer team fell 4-1 to HCAC newcomer Earlham College on a sunny Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Both teams were held scoreless in the first stanza but the Quakers pulled ahead in the second half, knocking in four goals while only allowing one. The loss dropped Bluffton back to 2-8 overall with a 0-3 HCAC record. Earlham improved to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC.

The Bluffton defense proved to be strong through the first half as they held Earlham scoreless despite allowing 18 shots. The Quaker defense was locked down and it did not allow a single shot from the Beavers in the opening period. The teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie.
 
The offense for both teams finally showed up in the second period. Earlham tallied their first goal from AMEER YUSUF after just eight minutes of play in the half. Bluffton knotted the contest six minutes later when the Beavers knocked in a goal of their own at the 59:16 mark from freshman ZACH STURM (Grove City). The Quakers quickly took advantage of the ball after the goal, and 30 seconds later they added another goal, this time from ALEX FERREIRA. The Beavers were held scoreless through the rest of the match, but Earlham added another two goals in the final five minutes for a 4-1 victory.
 
Bluffton University took four shots, while Earlham produced 30 for the game. The Beavers forced nine corner kicks compared to just three for the visitors. BRIAN GOOD (Elida) recorded 11 saves in the loss. Zach Sturm took two shots while JACOB GRAHAM (Elida) and NOLAN PHELPS (Monroe/Lemon-Monroe) each put up a shot for the Beavers.
 
The Bluffton men will travel to Anderson University this Saturday, October 9, for another HCAC matchup when the Beavers look to get back in the win column. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
