Huntington drops Bluffton 2-1 in double overtime

September 7, 2011

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - A JAKE ESSIG tally less than three minutes into overtime number two sent Huntington to a 2-1 victory over the Bluffton University men's soccer team on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011. ADAM CHRISTNER set up the game-winner, helping the Foresters (1-3) to their first victory of the season. Bluffton fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Freshman NEIL LINDSEY (New Carlisle/Tecumseh) converted a nice feed from TYSON SPENCE (Arlington) midway through the first period to give the Beavers their first lead of the season. Bluffton held that lead until minute 61 when NICK HARMSEN made it 1-1 with his unassisted goal for Huntington.

Although the Foresters were pelting the Bluffton defense en route to a 38-6 advantage in total shots, DAN SAVILLE (Toledo/Central Catholic) kept Bluffton knotted on the scoreboard through regulation. A scoreless 10-minute overtime period set the stage for Essig's game winner early in the second extra session.

The home team finished with a 17-2 advantage in shots on frame, while racking up an 11-0 margin on corner kicks. Huntington committed seven more infractions (15-8) than the visitors.

Neil Lindsey, KEVIN WILLIAMS (Pandora-Gilboa) and NATE BYRUM (London) all tallied two shots for Bluffton. Saville collected 15 saves against the Huntington offensive onslaught.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, when they host Goshen College. The contest is slated for 2 p.m.
