Caleb Berlon named Academic All-HCAC

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference recently announced the fall honorees of the HCAC All-Academic awards for the 2012-13 school year. Nineteen Bluffton University athletes were recognized for their efforts in the classroom. Women's soccer led the way for the Beavers with six honorees. Football and volleyball both checked in with four honorees.

Senior MADDIE MOORE (Linn Grove, Ind./South Adams) and juniors MAGGIE ARMSTRONG(Vevay, Ind./Switzerland Cty.), LIZ WEBB (Ashland), KATIE STEENROD (Sidney) and MEGAN MOREO (Spencerville/Delphos Jefferson) are all repeat honorees from the women's soccer team. It marked the third straight year that Moore was honored by the conference. Sophomores KAYLEEN MEARDITH (Kinsman/Badger) picked up her first HCAC All-Academic award following the 2012 campaign.

Seniors THOMAS GINGRICH (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) and RYAN SABIN (Canal Winchester) from the football team were recognized as HCAC All-Academic for the third consecutive year. Junior SHAWN FROST (Edison/Mt. Gilead) and sophomore JACOB HUBER (Findlay/Van Buren) both earned their first HCAC All-Academic award.

Senior HEATHER SCHIERER (Crescent Springs, Ky./St. Henry) finished with her first Academic All-HCAC honor following a season in which she was also First Team All-HCAC. Juniors BETHANY BEHNFELDT (Napoleon) and LINDSAY KROHN (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) along with sophomore KRISTYN HOVEST (Pandora-Gilboa) joined Schierer on the HCAC All-Academic team. Behnfeldt and Krohn are both repeat performers.

Senior CHRIS ARNOLD (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury), from men's cross country, picked up his second consecutive Academic All-HCAC honor this season. Also earning Academic All-HCAC recognition was senior ALISON JANZEN (Whitewater, Kan./Remington), who placed seventh at the Heartland Conference Championships.

Picking up Academic All-HCAC honors from the women's tennis team were senior MELISSA HOSTETLER (Goshen, Ind.) and junior ASHLEY JONES (Fayette/Evergreen). Both women were Academic All-HCAC for the second straight year.

Sophomore CALEB BERLON (Kettering/Fairmont) earned HCAC All-Academic honors following his first year of eligibility in 2012.

To be named All-Academic HCAC, a student-athlete must have completed a full year at the institution, be a varsity athlete and carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 through the semester preceding the end of the season.
