Bluffton nets 1-1 tie with Capital in 2024 opener

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's soccer team controlled the first half en route to a 1-1 tie with Capital on a blistering Friday, Aug. 30. The sun was hot and so were the Beavers as they allowed just one shot by the Comets through the first 45 minutes of Head Coach Sean Kaighin's Bluffton debut! Both teams stand 0-0-1 heading into week two of the season.

With Bluffton controlling the ball and the pace of play, Jackson Clark (Mount Blanchard/Riverdale) stepped up and did Jackson Clark things. He drilled a free kick into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead midway through the opening stanza. The home team finished with three of the four shots in the first half, leading 1-0 at the break.

A very talented and proud Capital club came out firing in the second half, piling up a marked 12-6 edge in shots, but it wasn's until Devon Hess buried a laser from the right wing with just over five minutes to play that the Comets could find the back of the net. The visitors kept the pressure up and nearly did it again in the waning minutes, but Bluffton did what it needed to do to hand Coach Kaighin a tie in his first match at the helm.

Capital finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots and the visitors also forced seven more corner kicks (11-4). The Comets racked up two more fouls (11-9) in a well-played season-opening matchup.

Clark finished with three shots and Bluffton's lone tally, while Alex Brown (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) chipped in with two attempts.

Senior Angel Velasco-Urbina (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) finished with three stops, including the game saver with just a minute to play!

Bluffton will head to Great Lakes Christian for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
